The IGN, in collaboration with the Department of Emergencies and Education, installs in schools and other buildings of the municipality a network of accelerographs (16/02/2017)

This network consists of several tens of sensors distributed throughout the city, as well as peripheral areas and surrounding villages.

These are equipment based on MEMS technology (Microelectromechanical Systems) that make it possible to study in great detail the behavior of each zone or neighborhood of the city in the face of moderate earthquakes;

And with that knowledge, to improve the future response of buildings to earthquakes of greater danger

The Councilor for Emergencies of the City of Lorca, Juan Miguel Bayonas, reported this morning that the National Geographic Institute (IGN) has recently started, in collaboration with this area of management and the Department of Education, the installation of a network of accelerographs (Equipment for the measurement of strong earth movements caused by earthquakes) consisting of several tens of sensors distributed throughout the city, as well as peripheral areas and surrounding villages.

The Emergency Councilor explained that "these are equipment based on MEMS technology (Microelectromechanical Systems) developed and manufactured by IGN itself with the name of SILEX, which due to its minimum installation requirements and reduced cost, allow a massive installation in environments This high densification of equipment makes it possible to study in great detail the behavior of each zone or district of the city, even of each singular building - to earthquakes of moderate intensity, and with that knowledge, to improve the future response of the buildings to earthquakes of Greater danger ".

Juan Miguel Bayonas has indicated that "currently, in a first phase and with the joint cooperation of the Department of Emergencies and the Department of Education, through the Municipal Emergency and Civil Protection Service, IGN is proceeding to install the first 15-20 SILEX in Secondary Education Institutes, schools and other buildings of the urban area of Lorca, while the systems of sending and receiving data via the Internet to the IGN Data Analysis Center are being developed. "

The Edil de Emergencias reported that "once this small initial network is put into operation, a second phase of its development will begin, consisting of the installation of new SILEX equipment in peripheral areas and surrounding villages, to complete the 50-60 equipment that Will constitute the Lorca Accelerograph Network (RAL) of IGN ".

Bayonas, lastly, stressed that "with the start of operation of the RAL, Lorca will become the first city in Spain to have a type of facility that is proving its great utility in cities around the world with high seismic risk , Such as Los Angeles (USA), Tokyo (Japan), Acireale (Italy) and Christchurch (New Zealand), among others.
