The City Council asks HM the King to grant the Honorary Tie of the Royal Order of Isabel the Catholic to the UME (29/05/2017)

The EMU has on several occasions assisted the Lorca population, not only during the earthquakes of 11 May 2011, but also on two other dates: the floods of 28 September 2012 and the fires of 6 August 2016

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil Jódar, has announced that the Consistory will ask HM the King, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, to be granted the Standard of the Military Emergency Unit the Royal Commander's Tie of Honor Of Isabella the Catholic, the highest decoration that in Spain can be granted to an institution or collective entity, for the extraordinary humanitarian and salvage work carried out in Lorca during the most tragic moments of its history.

"We had knowledge through the EMU's command that this honor can sometimes be granted at the urging of City Councils and other bodies, for this reason, we consider that from the City Council of Lorca we raise this proposal, since it is known by all Enormous work developed by this Unit in our town in various events in its history, "explained Gil Jódar.

"The EMU has on several occasions assisted the Lorca population not only during the earthquakes of 11 May 2011 but also on two other dates: the floods of 28 September 2012 and the fires of 6 August 2016 "For Lorca there are not enough words or gestures to express the gratitude we feel for the unceasing work that, with enormous professionalism and dedication, played the members of the EMU in those very difficult days," said Fulgencio Gil.

The First Edil recalled that "in 2012 the local Government was pleased to hand over to the General Head of the EMU, in an emotional memory, the National Flag that waved in the Town Hall the fateful day of the earthquakes and, later in 2015 Was given to this unit the Gold Medal of the city, this being the maximum distinction that the City Council can grant to an institution, as a sign of recognition and eternal gratitude of the people of Lorca for their immense work. We add to the just request. "

On May 11, 2011 Lorca was shaken by two successive earthquakes that killed 9 people and wounded several hundred neighbors, destroying most of the buildings, especially those that were heritage and artistic treasures, as well as the main urban infrastructures .

It was the greatest natural disaster known in contemporary Spain.

A few hours after the event, with surprising immediacy, the first units of the EMU belonging to the Emergency Intervention Battalion quartered in Bétera (Valencia) came to the aid of the Lorca.

The UME forces grew up to 400 men who, with all their auxiliary machinery, turned to the rescue of the population, installing in three hours three camps capable of hosting 5000 people, as well as logistical infrastructures (light, Dispensaries, field hospitals, etc.).

Soon they joined the Bétera, the UME Tactical Group, with the search and rescue company with dogs, as well as a section of Engineers, who were in charge of propping and securing the buildings and structures.

Given the immense magnitude of the catastrophe suffered, in the days that followed, other forces of the Battalions of Saragossa, Leon, Madrid and Seville were incorporated into these humanitarian tasks, to a thousand troops who, with heavy machinery and many other means, lent to the Lorquinos an effective aid.

The presence of the Military Emergency Unit in Lorca lasted until November 2011.
