The Department of Health clarifies that the insects appeared in Corredera are innocuous, neither transmit diseases nor sting and will disappear in a few days (02/06/2017)

Last Monday the City Council contacted the Department of Entomology of the Faculty of Biology of the UMU to identify the species and establish the appropriate measures.

This is Cydnus Aterrimus, the family of the usual "cobbler".

The Councilor for Health, Consumption and Commerce in the City of Lorca, María del Carmen Ruiz, explained that, according to information provided by experts in the field, the appearance of a particular insect on the street Corredera responds To a habitual phenomenon that is registered after episodes of rain and a sudden increase of temperature, circumstances that have occurred in our city in the last weeks.

Ruiz Jódar has indicated that technicians of the Department of Health were put in direct contact and last Monday with the Department of Entomology of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Murcia once detected the presence of this insect, to identify their species and proceed To take appropriate action.

That same day it was transferred to the Town Hall that is not, in any case, a type of harmful insect, being the only annoyance that produces the fact that they give off some bad smell when they step on.

It is to be anticipated that, according to the forecasts and experience of similar cases, this incidence will dissipate without major incidence.

The Edil de Sanidad has pointed out that this is an incidence similar to other episodes that in previous years were recorded in the same street.

In this case, according to the experts consulted, it is an insect belonging to the genus Cydnus (from the same family as the "cobblers"), it is harmless, it does not transmit diseases or itch the human being, because it feeds of plants.

María del Carmen Ruiz has indicated that the City Council, since this eventuality was detected, is applying the recommendations transferred by the experts in the matter, who have indicated as ordinary treatment in this respect to intensify the usual cleaning tasks in this street to avoid The accumulation of remains of this insect, which is expected to disappear in a few days.

It should be clarified that municipal technicians advise against any type of fumigation to treat this phenomenon, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which, like the Pest Control Regulations, also discourage pesticide or Biocides of this type in urban spaces in circumstances such as this.
