Lorca, capital of study on Jewish archeology with a course given by university experts from Georgetown, Salamanca, Granada and the National Archaeological Museum (13/06/2017)

The seminar, organized within the program of the Universidad del Mar, has already opened the registration deadline.

Will be held from July 18 to 20, taking as scenarios the Municipal Archaeological Museum and the Castle of Lorca.

The Councilor for Culture in the City of Lorca, Agustín Llamas, has announced that the registration deadline has already been opened to participate in the IV International Course of Medieval Archeology of Sepharad, whose objective is to present the culture and archeology of Jews who Lived in the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages (V-XV centuries).

Llamas Gómez explained that the course will be developed in several theoretical sessions and different practical workshops that will give attendees an updated overview of the most relevant aspects of the material reality of Jews in the Iberian Peninsula.

We are talking about a seminar that will be held from July 18 to 20, taking place as the Municipal Archaeological Museum and the Castle of Lorca.

The Edil de Cultura has stated that the course will provide the student with tools that allow him to identify and analyze those aspects of medieval material culture that can be considered differentiating features of the Jewish communities in the Islamic and Christian contexts of the Iberian peninsula during the period medieval.

To this end, a series of lectures given by some of the best specialists in Archeology of the Jewish minority in the Middle Ages will be combined with several practical workshops.

The sessions will focus on the characterization of religious spaces (synagogues and ritual baths), the analysis of funeral rituals and the classification and interpretation of liturgical and domestic furniture.

The exceptional archaeological find of the late medieval Jewish quarter of the castle of Lorca and its synagogue of the XV century will be the ideal setting for the development of practical contents, which will include working with original archaeological materials (plasterwork and ceramics) and the analysis of buildings and contexts Archaeological sites.

Agustín Llamas has also indicated that this year's edition will feature renowned specialists such as Jonathan Ray (University of Georgetown), Alfonso Vigil-Escalera Guirado (University of Salamanca), Guillermo García-Contreras Ruiz (University of Granada) And Sergio Vidal Álvarez (National Archaeological Museum).

The seminar, directed by the Professor of Medieval History of the UMU Jorge Eiroa and the Director of the Municipal Archaeological Museum, Andrés Martínez, is not only conceived as a field of theoretical and practical training in archeology, but also aims to become a space Of cultural dialogue on the common problems of the identification and interpretation of the Jewish archaeological contexts in historical societies mainly Christian or Islamic.

On the other hand, it aims to set the scene for debate on the problems arising from the enhancement of the medieval cultural heritage of the Jewish minorities, which have come to light recently with the controversies arising from the exhumation of human remains In funerary archaeological contexts.

This initiative is the only specialized course that offers a complete theoretical and, in particular, practical training on medieval archeology of the Jewish minority in the Iberian peninsula to students and specialists trained in archeology from other historical contexts or from countries familiar with material culture Of Jews in other settings.

The course is intended not only for specialists in Medieval Archeology but mainly for students, graduates and university graduates in History, professional archaeologists and managers of Cultural Heritage.

From a broader perspective, it can also be of great interest to students, graduates and graduates of different degrees related to the Social Sciences and Humanities, such as History of Art, Humanities, Geography or Anthropology and, logically, for all interested parties In the subject studied.

The Councilor for Culture has emphasized that the course will have a total duration of 25 hours, corresponding to 2.5 credits of free configuration 1 credit CRAU.

The sessions will take place in the Archaeological Museum of Lorca, except for the workshop of Thursday 20 (in the afternoon) to be held in the Castle of Lorca (a bus will be enabled to move students from the museum to the castle).
