They are encouraged to eat watermelon during the summer (20/06/2017)

The Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Murcia (Fecoam), in collaboration with the City of Lorca, collaborate in the promotion of one of the most representative agricultural products in the area of ​​Lorca and Guadalentín valley, such as watermelon.

The presentation of the campaign, under the title 'If you're thirsty, eat me' was held this morning, with the assistance of the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Francisco Jódar, along with Fecoam President Santiago Martínez and Councilman Of Development and Infrastructures, Agriculture, Livestock and Water of the Consistory lorquino, Angel Meca.

One of the actions that will be carried out to promote the consumption of this fruit in the summer months will be the distribution of a diptych in which the benefits of watermelon consumption in the population are explained.

The information has been made by Dr. Juan Madrid, head of endocrinology at the University Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca, a strong advocate of the Mediterranean diet and fruit and vegetable products in the prevention of diseases such as obesity, hypertension or heart complications.

The information, which will be distributed throughout the Region, shows that this product is not only water and sugar, but a food rich in nutrients with only 20 calories per 100 grams of watermelon.

In addition, it contains vitamin A, magnesium, folic acid and other beneficial nutrients for cholesterol control and cardiovascular health.

The Region of Murcia is the first Spanish province in watermelon production.

In terms of exports, Spain exported a total of 650,000 tonnes last year, of which 165,000 came from the Region, the international market, in addition to the national market, being a major consumer of this product.

Countries like France, Germany or England present great demand for "Murcian watermelon".

In the Community, watermelons are produced in all varieties, with and without seeds, following sustainable cultivation methods, with an efficient use of water and nutrients for outdoor cultivation.
