The Department of Health and the College of Veterinarians start Saturday the Official Vaccination Campaign against rabies in the districts (23/06/2017)

The objective of this campaign, which is carried out in Zarcilla de Ramos, La Paca, Las Terreras, Coy, Doña Inés, Torrealvilla, Zúñiga, Zarzadilla de Totana, Avilés and La Parroquia is prevention of diseases in companion animals (dogs, Ferrets and cats).

The Councilor for Health in the City of Lorca, María del Carmen Ruiz, has reported that the Official Rabies Vaccination Campaign (Lyssavirus) will start tomorrow Saturday June 24 in the different districts of our municipality.

This initiative will be carried out by Lorca professionals assigned to the College of Veterinarians, who will carry out a battery of trips to provide this service in different enclaves of our municipality.

The Minister of Health has emphasized that the objective of this activity, which benefited 146 pet owners last year, is to approach and implement the work being developed in the veterinary clinics located in Lorca serving during the month of June "in situ" to the neighbors of our districts.

Ruiz Jódar has stated that "this campaign, which is carried out through the joint action of the City Council with the Departments of Health and Social Policy, and Water, Agriculture and Environment, and the Official College of Veterinarians of the Region of Murcia , Contemplated in the Order of June 24, 2015, aims to prevent diseases in companion animals, especially dogs and ferrets older than 3 ½ months and in cats with 5 months of age.

The Councilor for Health has explained that anti-rabies vaccination can be carried out throughout the year, however these specific annual missions are developed in enclaves of districts that do not have veterinary clinics that can provide the service.

The benefit of inoculation is twofold;

Since the animal is protected in the first place from suffering this disease, and the population is avoided the risk of being reached.

The Edil de Sanidad has indicated that dog owners, in addition to complying with the legal obligation to provide them with the corresponding identification chip, have to provide their pets with this series of vaccines:

Month-and-a-half puppies: Polyvalent vaccines, parvovirus and distemper.

Puppy with 2 months: Multipurpose vaccine.

Puppy with 3 months: Vaccine of multipurpose reinforcement.

Puppy with 4 months: Rabies Vaccine.

Dog with one year: Polyvalent vaccine (reminder) and rabies (memory).

Each year: Polyvalent vaccine (reminder) and rabies.

Spain has different rules that establish the requirements for the control of rabies, such as the vaccination of dogs, cats and ferrets (Law 8/2003), animal identification by microchip (Law 11/2003) or tattoo (before 03 (EU Regulation 577/2013) or to third countries (CEXGAN, MAGRAMA).

The Councilor for Health recalled that the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) drafted at the Geneva Conference on Encephalitis in December 2015 indicate that both WHO and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Maintain their commitment to eliminate human rabies transmitted by dogs as a priority of public interest and to continue their joint efforts to strengthen political will and facilitate training through existing methodologies and the creation of new education programs.

The challenge for WHO is to optimize the effectiveness of combining canine vaccination in mass, to achieve 70% vaccine coverage in populations at risk, to promote responsible dog ownership and to control canine populations according to norms Of the OIE.

It also seeks to promote and support the OIE and WHO mechanism for the maintenance and establishment of regional vaccine banks to provide timely quality vaccines in order to facilitate the implementation of regional and national elimination programs Of human rabies transmitted by dogs.

Ruiz Jódar has anticipated that, in the specific case of our municipality, this public health risk prevention campaign will begin next Saturday, June 24, and will run through multiple councils until July 3.
