The restoration of the pinnacles in the tower of San Patricio, demolished by the earthquake of 2011, culminates the works to recover the outer ornamentation of the Collegiate (26/06/2017)

It is a battery of 6 elements of 450 kilos each that will be anchored to the structure of the building thanks to the application of a special resin (epoxidica) and stainless steel pins.

The Councilor for Culture in the City of Lorca, Agustín Llamas, has reported that the work of relocating the outer pinnacles on the bell tower of the Collegiate Church of San Patricio, which are being developed throughout today's day, complete The intense rehabilitation of the temple, which could be opened to worship and the celebration of the many activities that took place last March, coinciding with the commemoration of precisely the saint that gives it its name.

Llamas Gómez has indicated that the work that has begun to be executed this morning requires precision, dexterity and ostensible technical coverage, which includes the participation of a dozen technicians and workers as well as the location of two large cranes that have been parked In the Plaza of Spain, respecting scrupulously the pertinent security measures and the parallel conditions that carry operations of these characteristics.

The Minister of Culture has stated that we are talking about an operation that requires the coordination of both cranes, and while one of them is responsible for lifting the heavy pieces that make up the pinnacles (450 kilos each element), the other elevates above Of the belfry a metallic basket in which are the operators in charge of manually placing these ornamental trim.

The pinnacles will be subject to the structure of the temple by means of pins of stainless steel and epoxidica resin.

The Councilor for Culture has explained that these pinnacles, which form an idiosyncratic part of the monumental profile of the Collegiate, fell on the roofs of the temple and its Chapter Rooms during the earthquakes of 2011, causing serious damage to the roofs.

In fact, some of them not only hit the roof, but pierced it and hit the temple floor itself.

The restoration of San Patricio, property listed as a Property of Cultural Interest and the second most important temple in the Region of Murcia after the Cathedral, has a total budget of 4.37 million euros, of which the Community has contributed 70%, just over 3 million euros.

The work has consisted of structural repair as a consequence of the earthquakes, but also in the decorative elements.

In fact, the Regional Government has invested 700,000 in the value of the paintings found during the works in the Chapel of the Alcazar, the sacristy, the access to the main altar and pilasters of the turn.

It also highlights the discovery of archaeological remains of the early church of St. George on which was built from 1533 St. Patrick to commemorate the victory in the Battle of Los Alporchones.

The Collegiate Church of San Patricio, whose title corresponds to the Bishopric of Cartagena, is a building of Renaissance style that was declared National Historical-Artistic Monument by decree of January 27, 1941. Its construction lasted for almost 250 years, until 1780, following The project of Jerónimo Quijano, master of the Works of the Bishopric of Cartagena.

Conceived with cathedral airs, its interior is articulated in three naves, twelve lateral chapels in the buttresses, chorus and trascoro, girola with radial chapels and bell tower in the head.

It is also worth noting the high cruise and the monumental cover.

The integral restoration of Saint Patrick has made it possible to document a wide variety of decorative elements in the interior walls of the temple, paintings, stonework marks, as well as the discovery of the archaeological remains of the early church of St. George (demolished for the construction of Collegiate church) and the city walls and towers that passed by it (also found in the basement of the temple and eight of the crypts).
