The Community has already started 90 percent of the investments financed by the EIB in Lorca. The 185 million European Investment Bank loan is intended to alleviate the effects of the earthquake on housing, cultural heritage, education and roads (17/07/2017)

The regional government has already started 90 per cent of the planned investments in Lorca to mitigate the effects of the earthquake, financed with the 185 million euro loan signed with the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The Minister of Finance and Public Administrations, Andrés Carrillo, met this morning with the mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, to evaluate the status of the works executed under the loan.

He emphasized that "practically the entire population of this town has benefited from some of the projects developed, among which are reconstruction and rehabilitation of buildings, rebuilding of neighborhoods, educational buildings, cultural heritage, sports facilities and roads, among others ".

In 2012, the Community signed a loan agreement with the European Investment Bank for up to € 185 million to finance a major part of the reconstruction of the city of Lorca following the earthquake of May 2011.

These funds cover works carried out until the end of 2017, so that the EIB has recently been requested to extend the deadline for completion of the project until the end of 2018. The EIB loan has a repayment term of 15 years.

In the field of education, the rehabilitation of educational buildings and the acquisition of equipment and furniture for schools, institutes and other educational institutions has been included.

At present, almost all of the planned actions are being carried out, among which are works in the CEIP San José-El Consejero, IES Ramón Arcas and IES Ros Giner, among others.

In the field of culture, included in the Master Plan for Recovery of Cultural Heritage of Lorca, include the churches and convents most affected after the earthquake.

Some actions have been financed, in whole or in part, by funds received from the EIB, such as the San Francisco de Asís College, the San Patricio Collegiate Church and the Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church.

An important part of the funds has been allocated to actions in the area of ​​comprehensive rehabilitation of neighborhoods and housing, such as the neighborhood of La Viña and surrounding areas and the neighborhoods of Alfonso X, San José and San Diego, which are already Finalized.

At present, we work in the neighborhoods of Calvario, San Pedro, Santa María, San Cristobal, Periago, Avellaneda, Santa Quiteria, Juan Carlos I Avenue, San Fernando, Apolonia-Los Angeles, Cervantes Mall and rural centers ;

And work will be carried out soon in the neighborhoods Cristo Rey-La Salud, Avenida Europa and Santa Clara.

There are also other performances in the neighborhood of San Antonio, Camino Viejo del Puerto, Jerónimo-Santa Fe and the historic center.

As for roads, improvements have been made in 26 of the 40 planned in the municipality.
