It requests an information telephone for farmers, technical meetings to inform trade unions and agrarian organizations about the disease, as well as preventive and control work, especially on abandoned farms, to reduce the risk of entry of the devastating bacteria And minimize its effects if it occurs

17.07.17.

The councilor of the United Left-Greens in Lorca, Gloria Martín, has demanded the Regional Minister of Agriculture, Francisco Jódar, to adopt "urgent measures" to tackle a possible plague in Lorca de Xylella fastidiosa, the bacterium known as the " Ebola del Olivo "which has already been detected in the municipality of Guadalest Alicante, 200 km from the City of the Sun.

Martín, already asked the regional government four months ago to take preventive action, strengthen surveillance and reduce the risk of entry of the devastating bacteria, which can put at risk 11,323 hectares of almond, 2,494 olive, 951 vine and 1,901 citrus Only in Lorca.

A disease that also attacks the aromatic plants, since the bacterium is housed in more than 300 species.

The Xylella fastidiosa, in its different varieties, has already destroyed one million olive trees in Italy and has ended in ten years with 70% of almond production in Mallorca, the first focus of the bacterium in our country.

"The epidemic is definitely here and the farmers have panicked without us knowing if the autonomous authorities are doing anything to face the consequences of the possible plague," Martin lamented.

For the councilor of IU-Greens it is "imperatable" the realization of protocols that help to prevent and tackle an agricultural crisis that could be of "catastrophic dimensions".

For this reason, it has demanded the "immediate" start-up of an information telephone for farmers, as has already been done in Andalusia.

Martín also called for technical meetings to inform trade unions and agrarian organizations about the disease, as well as preventive and control work, especially on abandoned farms, to reduce the risk of entry of the devastating bacteria.

It has also requested that budget estimates be taken into account to address the large economic losses that could result from the arrival of the pest to Lorca.

In that sense, recalled that Associations of producers have already warned of the urgent need to take action, given a fact that could seriously reduce this type of crops in Lorca and our autonomous community.

For its part, IU-Greens will raise this issue to the Plenum Ordinary of the City of the month of July where it will ask the measures carried out by the public administrations in front of this very serious risk for the agriculture of the municipality.
