They have recovered pipes, walls, glass, pylon and trough, and also the urban space has been reconditioned including the lighting, accesses and an attractive aromatic garden

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, and the Councilor for Tourism, Culture and Environment of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, Javier Celdrán, visited this morning the Fuente del Oro after its restoration.

The recovery of this popular monument has been possible thanks to the investment of 265,000 euros from the Autonomous Community within the Master Plan for the Recovery of Lorca.

Fulgencio Gil has indicated that "as part of the recovery work has been restored pipes, walls, glass, pylon and trough, and has also been refurbished urban space including lighting, access and an attractive aromatic garden. The source of gold is part of the cultural heritage of this land because over the decades and centuries what was originally an urban space intended to supply water to neighbors, to water the animals and laundry became a hallmark of identity of the city.

The Mayor of Lorca added that "the Fuente del Oro is also a symbol of the untamed character of Lorca and his neighbors. Throughout history the floods of the river or the breaks of the marshes destroyed the old source. Lorca and lorquines once again raised it, because it was necessary and because it was part of their cultural identity, ours. In day-to-day and everyday life was present, it is part of our tradition, it is our culture and therefore they have healed the wounds that floods and earthquakes provoked and receives us today with an admirable state, probably better than ever. "

Gil has stressed that "Lorca have to be proud of having recovered this space. But now we have the hardest thing: to keep the Fountain of Gold and respect it.And that is everybody's work.We have to enjoy the infrastructure but also take care of it, because only the future generations will be able to enjoy their Source. We, from the City Council we commit to take advantage of this patrimonial area for the cultural dynamization and therefore we will program various activities that, in tune with the environment, will allow to enjoy different arts , especially music, from the Source of Gold. "

The First Edil wanted to thank the "Regional Government for making this improvement possible that was a collective claim of the citizens of Lorca, as well as the architect Juan de Dios de la Hoz and the company Lorquimur, because they have achieved an absolutely exemplary conditioning, and encourage to that Lorca and Lorca to enjoy this beautiful space.

La Fuente del Oro was built in the 18th century and next to the Fuente del Caño they were in charge of supplying water to the population.

The fountain was composed in an original way by a water trough or a rectangular washbasin, on which the water was continuously discharged through a series of pipes.

In 1802 the break of the Pantano de Puentes produced an avenue that destroyed all the sources of the city, among them the one of Gold, that was reconstructed in 1818.

During the second half of the twentieth century, works of reordering took place in the space that led to the disappearance of the Fuente del Oro, causing the pipes to be buried underground and preserving only the structure of the old laundry.
