The City Council completes the drafting of the project for the integral rehabilitation of the church of San Juan (19/09/2017)

The recovery of the church will allow Lorca to recover for cultural use one of the most significant properties of the local heritage.

The Consistory will present the project, first, to the call for 1.5% Cultural Ministry of Development.

The Councilor for Culture in the City of Lorca, Agustín Llamas, has reported that the Municipal Council has already completed the technical and intervention project necessary for the restoration of one of the temples located in the upper districts of our city, as is the case of the emblematic church of San Juan, destroyed in the civil war in 1936. It is a project that foresees an investment of 1.5 million euros.

The project comes to complete the actions that the City of Lorca start for the restoration of the High Church of Lorca integrated into the protection environment of the castle.

It is recalled that after the earthquakes of 2011 the monumental complex of the city suffered the greatest destruction of the country's patrimony after the Civil War.

In view of the magnitude of these damages, the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute promoted the Master Plan for the Recovery of Cultural Heritage of Lorca, which was approved by an agreement of the Council of Ministers dated October 01, 2011. Within the actions taken in that Master Plan, including the Church of the Barrios Altos de Lorca.

The Councilor for Culture said that today the restoration works are being carried out in the Church of San Pedro, financed by the Autonomous Community through the loan obtained by the European Investment Bank, while also working in the Hermitage of San Lázaro financed by the City of Lorca, as well as in the Church of Santa María, whose rehabilitation is being executed and financed by the Ministry of Public Works.

The recovery of the Church of San Juan would culminate the actions of rehabilitation of the Churches of the High Districts.

These actions of rehabilitation and enhancement for cultural uses, along with all the infrastructure improvement works that the City Council is implementing in the city, will contribute to the regeneration of an area with a great tourist and historical potential.

The Edil de Cultura has stated that this project is of great importance to complete the development and regeneration of the area, providing its neighbors and all Lorca with a cultural equipment that will contribute to the improvement of the quality of their urban environment.

The integral intervention of the Municipality of Lorca after the earthquakes is assuming an activation of local employment thanks to the implementation of various training programs and employment of residents of the neighborhood, as well as the direct recruitment that is required by the battery of renovation works urban

The forecast with which it works by the Consistory is that this building once completed the restoration is part of the tour of Lorca Taller del Tiempo as has been done with other interventions such as the Porche de San Antonio, sections of Muralla del Castillo, Torre Rojano and Tower No. 9, which today are already enhancing the range of socio-cultural and tourist activities of the city.

The intervention, step by step.

The Church of San Juan was built in the fifteenth century but had to be rebuilt later in the seventeenth century.

The building presents in its compositional scheme a plant in the form of a Latin cross, a vault in the central nave, a dome and a bell tower.

Constructed with masonry and brick walls, the structure of the deck was mostly lost.

The laying and underpinning was the basic axis from which the works of action began, applying on the walls and cornices, the bell tower, and part of the dome.

Some of the arches of the belfry were also replaced and partitioned and filled most of the gaps to give greater stability to the building.

The Councilor for Culture has anticipated that the fundamental concept of this intervention is the restoration and conservation of existing elements, the coverage and closure of all spaces and interior conditioning for use related to socio-cultural activities.

In this sense, the existing elements of the new construction clearly differentiate and overlap to protect those and to complete the volumes and spaces lost.

At the structural level, the consolidation and reinforcement of factories and remains of vaults will be carried out.

A structure of laminated wood and phenolic board will be used to continue the order of elements such as arches fajones and vaults already missing, so that the structure itself is conforming spaces of the same geometry as the original ones.

On the outside there will be a slight zinc cover on the wood allowing a clear view of the vaulted Latin cross plant that frames the centrality of the decorated dome.

This opens up the 8 possible holes in the dome drum, which reinforces the interior symmetry, evenly divides the illumination and admits the beautiful decorations of the interior once restored.

The current access to the church is dangerously close to the access road to the castle, with practically no previous space, so that the entrance is transferred to the north platform whose level will be lowered to the level of the interior, and a lobby will be created of access regularizing the exterior volumes next to the chapels of this facade, so that it is acceded by the arc faced to the one of the main door.

It is also used to glaze the large arch now covered at the foot of the temple, which will introduce a sieved light inside.

Toilets will be built in the body of the old sacristy, as well as administrative spaces will be available on two levels.

All the elements of cornices, plasters, pilasters, wall coverings and paintings will be cleaned, consolidated and restored, being emphasized by the neutrality of the elements of new construction.

A new marble pavement is planned with underfloor heating via water pipes, with a moderate energy cost thanks to the latest generation machines.

The City Council is already working to get the funding needed for the works in the building, in fact the first possibility that the Consistory handles is its presentation to the program of 1.5% Cultural Ministry of Development.
