The PSOE calls for a municipal reading plan to encourage the reading habit among Lorca (19/12/2017)

García Jiménez requires the Department of Culture and Education to champion the development of this plan, through the constitution of the Municipal Reading Council to unify all efforts to make Lorca a reading society in all areas, from school to associations of the elderly

The councilor of the PSOE in the City of Lorca, María Antonia García Jiménez today asked for the constitution of the Municipal Reading Council, for which demands, as a first task, the impulse in Lorca of a municipal plan for the promotion of reading habit among the Lorca

Socialists are committed to making Lorca a reading society in all areas, from school to associations of the elderly.

Regardless of the many initiatives that the schools and institutes of the municipality, as well as public libraries, have been promoting for the promotion of reading, the socialist mayor says that the City must take another step "as a closer administration."

In fact, he assures that it is enough to comply with Law 10/2007 of June 22, Law of Reading, to know that it is the Town Councils themselves, as the closest administration, which have the duty to stimulate the creation of reading habits .

Despite everything, "we are surprised that this City Council has not yet undertaken any specific plan for this purpose, necessary, more so when we look at statistics such as just a few months ago, from the INE, which leave Lorca as the city from this region with the highest illiteracy rates ".

Therefore, and in view of this concern, the PSOE will request through an initiative to the Plenary that a municipal plan for reading and the book be established through the constitution of a Reading Council.

They intend that this Council be integrated by the Councils of Culture and Education, representatives of the different educational centers, and of the Consortium of the University Campus of Lorca;

representatives also from public libraries, as well as from different cultural or leisure associations related to literature and / or association or reading clubs.

The publishers and booksellers of our city should also be present, as well as the Municipal Archivist.

For García Jiménez, it must be this body that establishes a protocol for the promotion of reading, where the coordination of Lorca City Council and the Ministry of Culture of the Region of Murcia will be essential.

He points out that the cooperation of the Ministry of Health and Culture is also necessary so that, in coordination with the municipal library, a free book service can be provided at the Rafael Méndez Hospital, just as it has been done for years in other hospitals. of the Region of Murcia;

and yet "it was never carried out in any of the public or private hospitals of our city."
