The City Council will install for this summer a system of awnings that will generate a shadow corridor for pedestrian traffic in the streets Corredera and adjacent (12/02/2018)

This is an initiative framed within the European Project Life Adaptate, and is promoted by the Municipal Council, the Promotion Institute of the Region of Murcia and the General Directorate of Environment of the CARM.

The Councilors of Urbanism, Commerce and Citizen Participation of the City of Lorca, Satur Martinez, Maria del Carmen Ruiz and Francisco Javier Pelegrin, reported this morning that the Municipal Council plans to create a shadow corridor in the streets and adjacent Corredera whose installation is expected be able to start at the beginning of next June.

These are measures aimed at reducing the effects of heat waves and urban heat islands (shaded areas or shadow corridors) by installing awnings in Calle Corredera and adjacent.

The City Council of Lorca, along with the Institute of Development of the Region of Murcia, the General Directorate of Environment and municipalities of Spain, Latvia and Portugal, has launched the Life Adaptation Project, for the implementation of a series of measures or strategies that will try to combat climate change at the local level.

On the one hand, the City Councils will try to implement a Pilot Action in their municipality on an experimental basis and on the other hand, they will implement a Local Adaptation Plan (PACES): Action Plans for Sustainable Energy and Climate, using participatory approaches, to try to integrate various aspects related to the mitigation of climate change to local policies.

The project will last 4 years (September 2017 / September 2021) and has a budget amounting to € 327,953, subsidized with € 179,615 from the European Union and € 148,338 from the Municipal contribution.

We are talking about a plan that consists of the installation of awnings in various commercial areas and marked pedestrian traffic such as the streets Corredera, Pío XII, Alporchones and Almirante Aguilar, to create shaded areas or shadow corridors.

The objectives that are marked are:

- Reduce the temperature and therefore the thermal sensation of pedestrians.

- Reduce the temperature of facades and pavement that create "microclimates" in cities.

- Combat urban heat waves in favor of climate change.

- Reactivate trade in the area in the months of high temperatures.

- Reduce the expenditure on cooling of homes and shops in the area and thus CO2 emissions

- Adapt to climate change and the rise in temperatures expected for the coming years.

The areas that will benefit directly from this pioneering initiative in our municipality are Calle Corredera from Plaza de la Concordia to Álamo Street, Pío XII Street, from La Corredera to its confluence with Lope Gisbert (Casino), Alporchones Street from Corredera to Colmenarico.

According to the plan, the sails or awnings will be manufactured based on tensioned membranes, with a rhomboidal base cover, with the four anchors at the same height.

The membrane will be made in openwork color fabric to choose, fireproof, with straight sides and perimeter reinforcement tape and eyelets every 15 cm.

along the entire perimeter and rings in the four vertices.

The assembly will be made between facades, without intermediate masts.

Fasteners will be installed on the facades to support the continuous galvanized steel cable with tensioners at the required distances.

The canvases are joined to the front cable with high tenacity cords and at the same time joined together, maintaining a separation between them of at least 15 cm.

The action includes covering the central area of the streets selected with the canvases, leaving a gap between the facades of the buildings to allow the entry of light to the lower floors.

The canvas will be made of openwork fabric in beige and fire retardant material.

The assembly will be made between facades, without intermediate masts between the second and third floors of the buildings, and may have some slope depending on the conditions of the anchoring in the facades.

In order to make the anchors to the facades, the authorization of the Communities of Owners has been requested during a meeting held last week, opening a term that is expected to be completed as soon as possible,

The awnings will be temporarily located, for approximately 4 months.

They will be placed between the last days of May and the beginning of June, and will be withdrawn at the end of September (after the fair and parties).

The demonstration Pilot Action will be carried out for a period of 4 years 2017-2021.

So that the results can be contrasted, thermometers will be installed to indicate the effectiveness of the system, and surveys will be done to the population to know their satisfaction regarding the project.

In order that the results in terms of the reactivation of the trade can be evaluated, it requires the support of the merchants, to offer a document as a survey to their clients, as well as to show their opinion about the project and about the repercussion of the same at the level of sales.
