The Gypsy Development Plan benefits 105 participants in Lorca (14/02/2018)

The Gypsy Development Plan has 105 participants in Lorca, of whom 51 are part of the educational follow-up program and the remaining 54 are working to increase employability and improve social aspects.

The managing director of the Murciano Institute of Social Action (IMAS), Veronica Lopez, reported today at a press conference, together with the councilor for Local Development, Housing and Empowerment of the Historic and Monumental Area, Sandra Martinez, on the implementation of this initiative in the town.

The objectives of the plan are focused on raising the educational and social-labor level of the participants in the project and their families and in promoting social integration and incorporation.

The interventions are being carried out with the resident families in the scope of action of the Social Work Unit of San Pedro, San Juan and Santa María (Barrios altos de Lorca) with the completion of integrated itineraries of educational, social and labor promotion.

The program has a budget of 20,000 euros to cover the cost of the subcontracted company and scholarships for participants for assistance to programs and activities.

The coordination is carried out by the company Iniciativas El Gigante and the team consists of social workers, work counselors and street educators.

Within their training activities, individualized tutoring in terms of career guidance and workshops on basic personal skills and professional skills stand out.

Verónica López affirmed that "the Roma population constitutes a population group of special social vulnerability", since "there is a minority segment, composed of people in situations of social exclusion, in which the economic crisis and job destruction have had greater effects that on the population as a whole, so we try to have more impact on the employability of these people. "

The program was launched in December 2017 and will be operational until May 31, 2018.

This initiative is part of the National Strategy for the Inclusion of the Roma Population in Spain 2012-2020 and has been funded by the Ministry of Family and Equal Opportunities, through the IMAS, and by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality .
