IU-Greens demands a plan of consolidation of the remains of medieval fortifications in Lorca (19/02/2018)

The councilor of this formation, Gloria Martin, denounced the conscious destruction of patrimonial assets of enormous relevance for the history of the locality, while a fortune was squandered on recovering the Sutullena's coso and the avarice of its current owners was rewarded to give satisfaction to the mayor's bullfighting fans

The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martin, today asked the PP Government team in Lorca to urgently address a plan to consolidate the remains of medieval fortifications that remain in the municipality.

Martín alluded to the castles of Felí, Aguaderas, Amir (Ramonete), Ugéjar, Luchena, Tirieza, Xiquena and Puentes, and assured that the scant remains of structures that remain are "very degraded and eroded" by their situation of "complete abandonment "

To them it would be necessary to add different watchtowers that dot the municipal term like the Torrecilla, the tower watchtower of San Juan or the one of Sancho Manuel.

A set of buildings that characterized Lorca as "frontier land", between the medieval kingdoms of Murcia and Al-Andalus.

For the mayor of IU-Greens is necessary to establish a series of patrimonial interventions "urgent, fast and forceful" to consolidate these historical vestiges and avoid "their disappearance and oblivion".

In this regard, he recalled that, for example, the castle of Xiquena, dated in the 12th century, has been inscribed since 2007 on the Red List of Heritage of the Europa Nostra Foundation as a "monument in danger" due to "progressive collapse", despite of being declared of Cultural Interest (BIC).

In 2014, the Chief of the Historical Heritage Service of the Region of Murcia ordered the City Council to implement "measures for the conservation and custody of the remains", without any action being taken in this regard, which Martin considered an "attack to our history, our heritage and our culture. "

In the catalog of protected goods of Lorca are also many other castles and towers cited, which is not preventing their destruction, which for Martin "hits" with the next investment of three million euros to restore the bullring and incorporate it into the municipal heritage.

In this regard, Martin lamented that the taurine interest of the Mayor, Fulgencio Gil, is what determines the fate of public funds linked to the recovery of local heritage.

"We are saddened by this conscious destruction of cultural assets of enormous relevance to the history of our locality while a fortune is squandered on recovering the Sutullena space and the greed of its current owners is rewarded, who will leave with the money of the Insurance Compensation Consortium. and with 1.2 million euros in your pocket, "he said.

Therefore, Martin has encouraged the local government to act with "sensitivity, responsibility and intelligence" to stop the degradation of these monuments and incorporate them as points of historical interest in a network of routes linked to sustainable tourism.
