IU-Verdes Lorca denounces Jódar's "sick obsession" for devastating the environment of Puntas de Calnegre, now with the construction of a mega-polygon (12/03/2018)

The councilor of Izquierda Unida Verdes in Lorca, Gloria Martin, harshly criticized the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and former mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jódar, for his intention to install a polygon of marine crops on a stretch of coastline in front to Puntas del Calnegre, between Puntas del Siscal and the beach of Parazuelos.

The Ministry directed Jódar has put out to tender the preparation of the study of environmental impact on the construction of a polygon of 130 hectares for the intensive marine cultivation of 8,000 tons per year of different species -mainly tuna, seabream, sea bass, corvina, seriola and sole - in floating cages.

Martín explained that the project would be located within a Special Conservation Zone (SAC) of the Natura 2000 Network and within the Levantine-Balearic marine demarcation, established in Law 41/2010, on the protection of the marine environment.

It would also affect the Sites of Community Interest (SCI) "Calnegre" and "Submerged Litoral Strip".

In this regard, it has warned of the enormous environmental damage that would result from the dumping of huge quantities of food and excrement remains, as well as chemical products derived from the use of medicines (antibiotics, biocides, antiparasitics) and substances used for cleaning and maintenance of facilities, such as antifouling paint, highly polluting.

Martin recalled that both the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) and the Murcian Institute for Agricultural Research and Development and Food (IMIDA), have already shown the "diminished" response capacity of the Posidonia meadow parallel to the line of coast in the face of disturbances that result from intensive aquaculture, which could cause its deterioration.

The polygon would also generate impact in the rest of the aquatic ecosystems and would be a serious danger due to accidental catches, boat interactions and water contamination for protected animal species, such as the bottlenose dolphin and the loggerhead turtle.

Submarine noise would also affect other species of interest in the area such as the pilot whale, the sperm whale or the whale.

Not to mention the possible impact of the effect called on other dangerous species for humans, in an area near the bathroom.

The mayor of IU-Greens has also referred to the mechanical destruction of the seabed by the placement of anchors, in addition to affection to the Cabo Cope-Puntas de Calnegre Regional Park if the drift of the pollutant load occurs towards the south.

Martin recalled the recent accession of the mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, to the Covenant of Mayors against Climate Change and has demanded that he strongly opposes the construction of the marine polygon that also has an impact on this aspect due to the polluting emissions of greenhouse gases.

The councilor has made reference to other worrying aspects contemplated in the project of creation of the polygon, as the seismic hazard induced by the completion of the work, as well as the discharge to the sea of heavy metals or hydrocarbons.

He has also referred to numerous criticisms and allegations by the residents of the area, given the obvious damage caused by this activity that would worsen the quality of the surrounding bathing waters and generate a terrible landscape impact, particularly on the beaches of Parazuelos, Calnegre and Puntas del Siscal.

The Fishermen's Association of Mazarrón has also indicated that the former aquaculture activity had negative effects on extractive fishing in the area, causing loss of available areas for fishing and fishing grounds, as well as danger to navigation safety.

Gloria Martín has harshly criticized Jódar's "sick obsession" for "devastating" the environment of the Cabo Cope and Puntas de Calnegre natural park.

"He could not exploit it urbanistically and now he intends to build a marine macropoligon that would seriously degrade the only stretch of coast that counts the municipality of Lorca," he added to add that "we know well the anti-ecologist profile of the former mayor, of which we have not freed despite his escape to Murcia because now, from his counseling, is still determined to annihilate our environment, which is the heritage of all.

For all this, the mayor of IU-Greens has demanded the unity of the municipalities of Lorca, Águilas and Mazarrón to stop the execution of this project.

"We ask Fulgencio Gil (PP), Maria del Carmen Moreno (PSOE) and Alicia Jiménez (PP), mayors of these municipalities, to put themselves at the forefront of the demands of neighbors and fishermen and raise common initiatives with which to prevent construction of this polygon.
