The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, reported that this Saturday, the 28th, the image of Our Patroness, La Virgen de las Huertas, returns to its Sanctuary, once the restoration and repair process has been completed by the Regional Government presided over by Lorca Fernando López Miras.
This work has been carried out by the experts of the Restoration Center of the Region of Murcia.
It is an excellent news of which we want to involve all citizens, because with this motive a Memorial Mass has been organized by the Franciscan Order and the Royal Brotherhood of the Virgen de las Huertas at 11:30 a.m. It will be officiated by the Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Planes, and will have the participation of the Bartolomé Pérez Casas Choir.
The image has benefited from an exhaustive analysis.
We must remember that the size of the patron saint of Lorca already passed in 2016 by the Restoration Center to begin studying its status and a specific intervention was made with the aim that the Virgen de las Huertas was in its sanctuary for the liturgical acts and festivities organized in his honor.
As a first step, an exhaustive conservation study was carried out, thanks to the modern technical means available in the workshops of the center, to detect possible problems of previous interventions or any pathology that may affect the size, later on it preceded its recovery and cleanup in order to contribute to its better conservation.
The Virgen de las Huertas de Lorca is a polychrome wooden carving from the first half of the 20th century made by the sculptor José Sánchez Lozano.
It is a replica of the primitive image of the Virgin, from the thirteenth century, which was destroyed in 1936.
Fulgencio Gil has indicated that works are currently being carried out in the church thanks to the contribution of 171,000 euros from the Regional Government.
These works include the restoration of the antechamber flooring as well as the restoration of part of the facades and the construction of a bufa chamber, through the installation of a parallel partition to eliminate humidity
On September 8 is commemorated the feast of the Patron of Lorca, the Virgen de las Huertas, which tradition says as the image brought by Alfonso X the Wise in 1244, when he conquered the city.
This day comes the Lorca council in civic procession from the city to the Marian Shrine.
Legend has it that Prince Don Alfonso, later Alfonso X el Sabio, when he arrived in Lorca to expel the Arabs, brought with him an image from Zamora, to which he implored help for his military campaigns.
That beautiful carving that he put in his royal store, had miraculous fame and the conquest of the citadel was attributed by both the prince and the Lorca to the Marian intercession.
After his departure Don Alfonso left the image in Lorca.
The inhabitants of Lorca showed their gratitude by raising a hermitage in his honor, in the same place where the royal store had been located.
This image acquired a lot of fame, and a great devotion.
Throughout the centuries it underwent some alterations, until during the Civil War it was destroyed.
Shortly after, a reply was ordered, but it seems that he did not like it and a new order was made, this time to Sánchez Lozano.
The present size of the Virgin represents her seated on a cushion, and she holds a fruit with her right hand, while with the left she holds the Child.
She was crowned canonically, as Patron of Lorca in 1944, by the Bishop of the Diocese of Miguel de los Santos Díez y Gomara.
She is honorary mayor of the city since 2010.
