Work begins consolidation of the first phase of archaeological excavations in the Jewish quarter of the area east of the castle of Lorca (10/08/2010)

At the beginning of the last week of July has started investment funded by the Autonomous Region for the consolidation of the archaeological site called the Jewish sector A1.1 of "The Fortress of the Sun."

In September, the guided tours begin at the site for groups.

The Councillor of Tourism of the Municipality of Lorca, Francisco Montiel, has reported that early in the last week of July has started action to consolidate the archaeological discoveries of the Jewish quarter of Lorca made in the area Castle A1.1 Lorca. "

Montiel explained that "the area you are speaking has a total area in the projected plane, and regardless of the thickness of the wall paintings, 296 m2, of which 254 m2 correspond to the excavation area itself and 42 to external routes to it. On the excavation is proposed a raised platform about 25.65 m2. The working surface of the wall in the north appears to be about 25 meters.

The Councillor for Tourism said "the aim of this project is the consolidation and enhancement musealization and ensure the stability of the factories and remains to protect them from weather."

The mayor reported that in parallel to the intervention of conservation and restoration, "will create a hallway or corridor, building on the premises of the Fortress of the Sun, allow the tour to the archaeological remains and also make it the same musealization . This can be done this coming September for small groups and by reservation on a product called 'Open for excavation' created by the Tourist Consortium 'Lorca Taller del Tiempo. "

The intervention is defined in this project falls within the framework of "Plan-Fort Parador del Sol" and represents the first building architectural and museological remains the same, third in the Plan, after the two archaeological campaigns that have been developed.

The budget for this action is 30,000 €, received a grant from the Department of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage of the Autonomous Community.

The intervention is being developed further by an interdisciplinary team led by Dr. Jorge A.

Eiroa Rodríguez de la Universidad de Murcia, Lorca and architects, M ª Isabel Sánchez Hernández, Jeronimo Granados and Francisco José Fernández Guirao.
