Cerdá highlights the commitment of regional livestock sector with the quality and preventive health care (13/09/2010)

Cerdá notes the efforts made to intensify the fight against Aujeszky's disease, which affects the pig and "has been totally eradicated"

The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, today stressed the commitment of the livestock sector and the regional government to "maintain the excellent quality" of livestock Murcia and "to have all the tools to prevent possible diseases."

The owner of Agriculture and Water XLIII today inaugurated the National Week of Pigs (SEPOR), held in Lorca from 13 to 16 September in which he was accompanied by the Mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar and SEPOR manager , Patrick Bermudez.

Cerda said that the Region of Murcia "is a reference to domestic livestock," and stressed that the sector has a "firm commitment" in the consolidation of "good health" achieved so far.

Highlighted the "good results" achieved in programs to combat infectious diseases such as Aujeszky affecting the pig sector and, he said, "has been totally eradicated."

Responsible for Agriculture said that "we will continue working to improve animal safety measures, and highlighted the actions of modernization and expansion of the network of disinfection of vehicles transporting animals in the Region of Murcia, such as that opened last week in Lorca.

Antonio Cerda said: "The pig is one of the most important livestock sectors in the region" because the community generates over 10,000 direct jobs and annual revenue of 340 million euros.

This sector represents 70 percent of the final output density and 20 percent of the regional final agricultural production.

The owner of Agriculture and Water also stressed that other species such as beef cattle, sheep and goats are also "reaching a significant regional economy."

Responsible for Agriculture said that Murcia is a leader in the Spanish pig production, with a census of 2,100 pig farms, of which 40 percent are located in the town of Lorca and the High Guadalentín.

The Murcia region is near the province of Lérida "the highest number of pig production," said Cerda, who recalled that the rate of slaughter for consumption over four million hogs annually.

The Minister of Agriculture said the pig "has a long tradition" in the Region of Murcia, and referred to the genetic improvement program implemented by the regional government to "recover the pork flat."

Technical seminars

The National Week of Pigs have an impact on this issue in the health aspect and the care of the meat supply.

During these days, they held seminars and conferences on various aspects related mainly to quality and food safety of meat products, marketing factors, the regulatory classification of the channel in pig carcasses and the recovery of livestock waste, among others.
