The Full Council of Lorca has this morning approved the appointment of the patron saint, Nuestra Señora la Real de las Huertas Honorary Mayor of Lorca, as announced by the Mayor, Francisco Jodar, during the course of events celebrating his feast day on 8 September.
Specifically, the motion has been supported by popular local groups and socialist, while United Left Greens voted against.
The constant devotion of Lorca to the Virgen de las Huertas has its seat in the legend of his brought to the city during the conquest by the then Prince Alfonso, along with its flattering and protective spiritual presence throughout almost 800 years.
Soon, we will celebrate the 70 anniversary of the arrival in our city of the new image of the Virgen de las Huertas, original replica sculpted by Murcia Sánchez Lozano in 1942.

The Chorus and Dance Group "Virgen de las Huertas" Lorca has its origins in 1977 as a result of the interest of a group of people in the garden they felt excited about the traditions of the municipal, conservation of these and dissemination of these cultural legacy of our ancestors.
This folk group organized in 1989 organized a festival coinciding with the feast of the patron saint of Lorca and this September have organized the First Children's Folklore Show Guadalentín Valley.
