The director general for the Promotion of Culture and the Book, Francisco Giménez, the mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, and Vice President of Cajamurcia, Manuel Jodar, today opened the new Municipal Archives of Lorca, which is five times the space for the custody and consultation documents.
The file is located in the palace of the XVI century Albuquerque and has three plants that we add a new building in which lie the storage rooms.
Thus, the new building will have room for researchers and storage, on the first floor, room distribution, binding, scanning, photo labs and rooms in the second, and conference room on the third floor.
The CEO explained that the new facility "a major step forward for the conservation of the important documentary to the municipality."
In this sense, Giménez described the historical record of Lorca as "one of the largest in Spain" and stressed "its uniqueness, the amount and variety of documents that contain".
The new facility features the latest storage systems to safeguard the bibliographic heritage through a constant temperature and humidity controlled sealing system in addition to security system and closed circuit surveillance.
The documentary begins with the privilege granted by Alfonso X in 1257, but also are kept, among others, the Chapter Acts of the Collegiate Church of St. Patrick, the District Attorney file Lorca (1492 to 1900) and a photographic archive 7,000 positive and 15,000 negatives, including the photographic collection of Pedro and Jose Rodrigo Menchón, offering a chronicle of the city through and images spanning from 1870 to 1956.
The investment was 420,000 euros for the purchase of the property, three million euros for the rehabilitation and conditioning, and 155,000 euros for the acquisition of equipment, provided by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Municipality of Lorca and Cajamurcia Foundation.
