The city contracts for emergency work on the side of the castle (04/07/2011)

The mayor has signed this morning an emergency city ordinance that contains technical and legal reports prepared by city officials that confirm the extreme urgency of the action.

July 4, 2011.

Heritage Council members and Public Works and Municipal Services, Francisco Garcia and Angel Mecca, have reported that the city of Lorca hired by way of urgent works for the consolidation of two new areas of solid rock on which sits the castle the city.

Councillors explained that the city council, following the earthquakes of May 11, commissioned a study by a company specialized in the area destined to know the current status of this area, since it is already feared that the earthquakes have strongly affected this perimeter.

The report has determined that the instability of the rocks has increased severely, forcing an emergency action to ensure safety around the castle and on the side of it.

The areas that have suffered more damage require more urgent action is Zone 1, located on the link roads up and down the castle, and 4, which corresponds to the branch down the road of mass circulation rock (between the water tank and the end of the houses in the neighborhood near you).

With respect to zone 1 the report states that it is this in which there has been the biggest collapse of massive, with rock falls with height greater than 6 m and weights exceeding 70 tonnes.

In fact, one stone of more than 10 tons rolled down the hill destroying the road in its path and ending its journey inches from the back wall of a house, after breaking the wall in advance that marked the backyard of the same .

The rest of the rocks along with a detached part of the wall, on the slopes are clearly unstable equilibrium, with the risk of moving, either by the compression of smaller stones that now make wedge effect, by the action of new seismic (earthquake aftershocks) or by the action of atmospheric agents (eg rain).

The treatment and action to be taken and chopped contemplate turning the material detached by backhoe tracks 30-35 ton jackhammer fitted.

The material so treated will remain in the area as a scree so you never need to transfer to landfill.

The resulting batter will be treated by placing a mesh retaining pins and 6 meters.

We understand that this area requires urgent and immediate action because there is a clear potential risk.

The earthquake caused landslides in 3 to Zone 4

Municipal sources have indicated that in Zone 4 have been three landslides: a 10, 60 and 80 meters of the deposit.

The treatment applied to the area will be the same as that used successfully in zone 2, ie at the base of the wall shall be the stabilization of solid rock pop by installing a mesh containment and bolts 6 meters.

At the bottom, and over the road, install a dynamic barrier of 6 feet tall and up to 6,000 kJ of impact energy absorption.

There is significant risk to people and facilities of the Castle and for people traveling on the road, and therefore recommend its immediate stabilization.

The municipal decree for the execution of the work has already been signed

Given the urgency of the actions that must be executed in the bulk of the castle, and has proceeded to sign an emergency decree that contains a technical report and other law made by local technicians who will be sent to the Government Office for the financing of these actions (whose cost is estimated at 1,273,000 euros) will be assumed by the state.
