The government representative visits the emergency repair of the reservoir water Lorca (09/09/2011)

Channel Commonwealth Taibilla works made ​​compatible with the guarantee of water supply

The Government Delegate to the Region of Murcia, Rafael González Tovar, and the Director of the Commonwealth of Channels Taibilla, Andrés Martínez French, visited the repair of the reservoir water Lorca, who was affected by earthquakes May 11 of the past and which is investing 2.3 million euros.

This work was declared an emergency and the cost has been assumed by the Ministry of Rural Environment and Water Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine authorizing his execution on July 5, at which the proceedings were underway , which these days are already well advanced.

The reservoir of Lorca, located near the town of the city is supplied with treated drinking water plant resources located in the vicinity, or volumes from the river Taibilla by Cleaver-Lorca driving.

This tank is the reservoir for water storage to supply water to the town of Lorca, most of the districts of the municipality and the towns of Puerto Lumbreras and Eagles.

It is therefore a strategic infrastructure in the supply of drinking water to a population of about 150,000 people.

The construction of the shell dates from 1948, so it is running more than sixty years.

Its storage volume is about 30,000 cubic meters, divided into three chambers.

The structure consists of a thin bricks covered with vaults supported on masonry walls and to date had not provided other than the usual problems of conservation.

However as a result of past seismic event on May 11, the facility has suffered extensive damage which is currently being repaired.

Structural damage and emergency actions

From the moment the earthquake that took place were activated emergency procedures to review the functioning of the facilities in service of the Commonwealth of Channels Taibilla, verifying that the water supply to the population was not affected by any damage serious.

However, inspections showed damage from the earthquake in reservoir water of Lorca.

Among the detected structural damage that has caused seismic event include:

Presence of cracks and fissures in the vault with diagonal path or along the longitudinal axis of the vault.

Cracks and crevices in large mass concrete arches of the walls supporting the roof, caused by differential movement between the ends of the arc.

Such injuries are particularly serious because it affects the structural functionality of the elements to be compromised the stability of vaults, which are connected by their type to each other, so that the collapse of one of the vaults would drag down the adjacent ones by few horizontal loads are counteracted.

Likewise, the collapse of the walls supporting the roof-fall of one of the arches of reinforced concrete would cause the collapse of the vaulted roof.

Solutions provided

As a result indicated the Secretary of State for Rural Water and authorized the July 5 performance by the relevant legal procedure and pursuant to the provisions of Royal Decree Law 6 / 2011 of 13 May, that urgent action to repair damage caused by earthquakes that occurred on May 11, 2011 in Lorca, conducting the first phase of repairing the reservoir of Lorca, a maximum of 2.3 million euros.

The action taken will solve the problem of structural rigidity that has the reservoir of Lorca, rushing urgently needed solution, while ensuring at all times maintain the water supply service to the entire field of population served from the reservoir.

Other works carried out

Besides the aforementioned, it has also carried out renovation of a section of the supply lines to the center of Lorca, with fifty years of service and running along the bridge of La Alberca.

This action allows the connection to the new Cuesta anise deposit of 50,000 cubic meters of capacity and which benefit 59,000 people.

The works consisted essentially in the assembly of 600 meters of ductile iron pipe 500 mm inner diameter, and their chests to house drains, vents and shut-off valves.

To enable these works the Government of Spain, through the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs, has invested a total of 360,344 euros.
