González Tovar Bishop shows his commitment to the historical heritage of Lorca (09/09/2011)

The Government delegate, Rafael González Tovar and the Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Planes have today held a cordial meeting in which they talked about the recovery of historic and artistic heritage of Lorca.

The delegate said the bishop has in him an ally to recover as soon as historical and cultural heritage of Lorca affected by the May 11 earthquake.

He insisted on the interest and commitment shown by the Government of Spain to carry out this task and return to the city which had splendor.

"The proof - noted - few hours after the earthquake, the Ministry of Culture conducted a survey of the needs that had to face, is reflected in a master plan for restoration of heritage, with an investment exceeding 52 million euros" , divided between local, regional and state owners.

The State has already contributed more than 5 million for this purpose in different city's heritage assets, both ecclesiastical and civil.

These are the church of San Mateo, Guevara Palace, the Tower of Ram, the Porch of San Antonio, or the archaeological museum.

González Tovar stressed the need to separate what are emergency actions and the rehabilitation of buildings, since the former are those that affect the lives and safety of people and have their own legislation.

Therefore we must continue working to get 100% financing rehabilitation activities also, with contributions from both administrations and seeking tax breaks and sponsorship of some works that in five years Lorca's cultural heritage has been recovered.

In this sense he pointed out that temples should be a priority, as well as recovering their cultural value may continue to hold its church services.

To delegate Lorca cultural property "provide a great tourist attraction and are a city's economic base that we can not underestimate."

Meanwhile the bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Planes, expressed concern to the government delegate for the state of cultural and religious heritage of Lorca, and indicated that "although the solutions are complex, I'm happy because I able to meet the different realities that affect the assets, the investments will perform.
