The council organizes a conference on earthquake damage in the Archaeological Museum's collection as a starting point for the acts of its twentieth anniversary (06/03/2012)

The museum, which contains one of the prehistoric collections in the country, was inaugurated in March 1992.

The Councillor for Culture of the City of Lorca, Sandra Martinez, with the director of the Municipal Archaeological Museum, Andres Martinez reported that the Municipal has organized a conference on damage from the earthquake last May 11 in the collection of Museum.

The earthquake damaged 160 pieces, of which 154 are being restored by the Institute of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture.

In estas154 damaged parts come in all ages and cultures exposed in the Museum, namely 3 Chalcolithic (III millennium BC), 30 of the culture of the Argar (II millennium BC), 50 Iberian (V-III centuries BC), 7 Greek (fourth century BC), 11 Roman (first century BC - V century AD), 13 Islamic Middle Ages (VIII-XIII centuries), 6 medieval Jewish (XV century) and 32 modern (XVI-XVIII).

The conference is titled "Effects and experiences in the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Lorca after the earthquake of May 11, 2011" and will be taught by Andres Martinez, Director of the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Lorca, on Wednesday, March 7, at 20:00 h.

To remedy the damage caused by the earthquakes since mid-November 2011 are being addressed by the municipality of Lorca, work towards the recovery of the seventeenth century house.

The rehabilitation works for the most affected part of the building, which is newly built, are about to start.

The Museum building has 2,200 m2 and is set by the union of two parts, the old palace of Los Salazar built in the early eighteenth century is restored and a new building annexed in the back for accommodate administrative and service units

History of the Museum of Prehistory

Recall that the ownership and management of Lorca Archaeological Museum since its opening in March 1992 is the City of Lorca.

The philosophy with which the Museum was conceived to provide Lorca and the surrounding area of ​​a useful and necessary for cultural development.

Over eighteen years of operation has been trying to interweave the different functions of conservation, research, exhibition, education and communication that includes the Law 16/1985, on Spanish Historical Heritage museum in its definition (Title VII, Art. 59.3 ), so it was at all times a living center to serve the community.

Movable heritage preserved in the Museum is your most valuable asset, as they are a very important and fundamental part of the historical memory of the region of Lorca forged with the dregs of cultures that occurred from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

This is a museum whose collections dominant unidisciplinary are archaeological.

The most important collections that saved the MAML are archeology, the pieces are presented in a reasoned and systematic to allow contemplation and try again effective teaching of Prehistory and History of the town of Lorca.

The Museum's permanent collection currently consists of about 4,800 pieces, shown in eleven rooms.

This exhibition has been made to pose a chronological journey through the cultures that inhabited the region linked to Guadalentín valley from the Middle Paleolithic (40,000 BC) to the Middle Ages.

Each room has information bilingual (Spanish and English) on the most outstanding pieces.

The main activities at the Museum to develop over 18 years of existence could be condensed into the following sections:

Temporary exhibitions: more than 20 self-produced shows such as "The Islamic ceramics in Murcia: Lorca materials" produced by the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Lorca has been shown as a roaming in 11 museums in the Region of Murcia.

Collaboration in large exhibitions such as "Footprints", "The Arts and Sciences in the Muslim West. Elders in the courts mursíes Mediterranean Floridablanca", "Alfonso X", "Caravaca on high", etc..

They have organized over 150 conferences, primarily related theme archeology, history and museology.

Research.

Have been addressed during these 18 years of operation to over 600 people involved in research and education.

Educational activities.

In the case of the Archaeological Museum of Lorca has been working with the Advisory periodicity of Humanities Center for Language and Communication of Lorca, the fruit of this collaboration is development of the three volumes of the Museum's tutorial, the third of which presented on 17 March.

Over the 18 years he has opened the Archaeological Museum have conducted several educational activities that focus primarily on the school.

From these experiences have prepared the following educational workshops: prehistoric cave paintings, Roman wall painting, masks and puppets, Roman mosaic and grain milling in Prehistory.

This last workshop can also be carried out in the Archaeological Park of the Cypresses, site of the Culture of Argar (Bronze Age).

After the experience gained during these years mainly guided tours to school and conducting training workshops for technical staff of the Museum, we reaffirm the great importance over the linkage of the permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions organized by the Archaeological Museum of Lorca teaching materials and educational experiences, which support teachers and increase awareness of our history through experiment with archeology.

The public.

The mayor of Culture has said that visitors to the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Lorca from the March 7, 1992 until May 11, 2011, the date on which closed to the public for damages caused by earthquakes, amount to 230,599.
