POST WWF and semiarid ecosystems recover in Lorca (02/08/2012)

POST WWF and launch an initiative to restore semi-arid ecosystems of the southeastern Spanish to regain their functionality and are more resistant to possible future impacts.

With this aim, carried out this fall a restoration of native forest in the municipality of Lorca (Murcia).

In collaboration with the Directorate General Environment of Murcia and Lorca with the City Council, WWF and POST are developing a reclamation project of former farmland in semiarid environments.

The organization gives priority to intervene in these sensitive areas, acting directly on the triggers, in order to restore the functions and key ecological processes of these ecosystems.

To this end, WWF recover vegetation cover typical of this environment acting on an area of ​​6 hectares and performing manual planting of species indigenous to the area as kermes oak, oak, broom, white rock rose, palm, esparto and carob.

Throughout the project will also develop awareness-raising activities with local people to convey the importance of maintaining ecosystems in good condition.

Spain is a country that is under a semiarid climate in much of its territory.

This system is characterized by erratic rainfall and low that brittle or soils with high salt content, they can cause serious erosion.

The transformation of the territory, coupled with the difficult weather conditions in the municipality of Lorca, causes a high risk of desertification.

The arid and semiarid currently occupy nearly two-fifths of the total area of ​​the continents, with the stand where life takes more than one billion people.

Enrique Segovia, director of WWF's Conservation Spain, said: "WWF wants to emphasize that forest restoration is a fantastic tool to promote responsible forest management and combating desertification as well, fires and global warming."

For his part, Jesus Gospel, deputy director of Corporate Social Responsibility POST, recalled that "from 12 years ago POST, through the program 'Green Line', financed the planting of forests in the country and contributes to the conservation of the same, as well as ecosystems that are endangered or have suffered a disaster in recent years. This was the case of Lorca, which will be located on 9 ° forest POST ".

To carry out these actions, the company sells mailing envelopes and packaging ecological network of offices, the sale of which a portion goes to reforestation projects, which since 2010 done in collaboration with WWF, thus promoting the fight against desertification and mitigation of global warming.

POST forests are an example of the sum of small everyday gestures such as the purchase of an envelope or a box made of green materials, you can achieve great goals.

WWF concludes by recalling the importance of companies in the conservation of nature through its policies on Social Responsibility (CSR) and encourage others to undertake activities such as POST.

Values: Important forest enclave, a stronghold of the space originally occupied by forests and that today are dominated by rainfed crops.

Its location is very important for the protection of wildlife, in this sense, there are significant concentrations of forest raptors.

Threats: Removal mining (marble and aggregates), opening and expansion of irrigation, road construction, uncontrolled dumping of rubbish and garbage, etc..
