Lorca host the commemoration of the "Sakharov Prize" to freedom of conscience, given annually by the European Parliament (29/10/2012)

The Councillor for Culture and Celebrations of the City of Lorca, Sandra Martinez, reported that the town will host the acts of the Sakharov Prize, which annually has been organizing the European Union.

The mayor explained that the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, named after Soviet scientist and dissident Andrei Sakharov, was established in December 1985 by the European Parliament as a means to honor individuals or organizations who have dedicated their lives or actions to defend human rights and freedoms.

The acts referred to contemplate different representations and performances, as well as a concert.

These will be presented in the coming weeks.

So far it has confirmed an event in which students participate Lorca.

This is the "Field of Hope", an activity that will develop a series of explanatory meetings on these awards in 30 schools in the city to inform students aged 8 to 10 years on what are the "Sakharov Prize" , why are delivered and who have been honored in previous years.

Students participate in a contest, whose works (by way of flowers) will be presented at Plaza Calderon in the "Field of Hope", a ceremony to be held on November 14.

Throughout the entire day will include three murals expression are coordinated by two professional illustrators and a painter.

Others are invited representatives of groups of elders and youth, as well as the audience.

Martinez Navarro said that the Sakharov Prize is awarded annually and delivered around December 10, the day that we signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations.

Candidates are nominated by MEPs and political groups in the European Parliament.

From the list of candidates, the Foreign Affairs Committee selects three "finalists".

The presidents of the political groups (the Conference of Presidents) then select one or more winners.

The award is formally awarded by the President of the European Parliament during the December plenary.

The winner receives a certificate and a check for 50,000 euros.

Nasrin Sotoudeh

Nasrin Sotoudeh, born 1963, is a lawyer and human rights in Iran.

He has represented opposition activists jailed after the presidential elections of June 2009, as well as young people who are facing the death penalty, women and prisoners of conscience.

Nasrin was arrested in September 2010 on charges of disseminating propaganda against the state and conspiracy to undermine national security.

She was imprisoned in solitary confinement and incommunicado.

Jafar Panahi

Jafar Panahi, born 1960, is a filmmaker, writer and producer Iran.

He was recognized internationally with the film "The White Balloon", which won the Camera d'Or in 1995 Cannes Film Festival.

His films often focus on the challenges that are faced children, women and people in need in Iran.

Panahi was arrested in March 2010 and later sentenced to six years imprisonment and disqualification from twenty of filmmaking.

He took his last film, "This is not a film," Iran's Cannes Film Festival, 2011 on a USB stick hidden inside a cake.
