The church of San Mateo de Lorca reopens its doors to the public on Sunday 18, after being restored from damage by earthquakes (07/11/2012)

Lorca City Council is satisfied that the Central government investment has restored an important part of the heritage of the city, which will help restore economic activity.

The Councillor for Culture of the City of Lorca, Sandra Martinez, reported that the church of San Mateo in this town will reopen its doors permanently on Sunday 18 November, once they have completed the refurbishment of the temple damage suffered by the May 11 earthquake.

The Councillor explained that "the works of the parish of San Mateo are just one example of the rehabilitation effort of our historical heritage with which dynamic events and the life of the city center, and local tourism, and thus help merchants and restaurateurs of the municipality, which will generate employment for Lorca ".

The mayor recalled that "from the first phase of emergency works (which were addressed urgent work to preserve the temple before any problems and slowing deterioration), the works financed by the Ministry of Public Works for the structural consolidation and security building (walls, arches, vaults, walls, tower and main façade) of about 980,000 euros, and works financed by the own parish and the Diocese of Cartagena, with sponsorship from companies such as Grupo Cosentino in the flooring, facilities , sacristy and adjoining areas, 1,465,500 euros have been invested in this important building of our cultural heritage. "

The Church of San Mateo is Baroque, has a Latin cross plan with three naves, dome in the center of the transept and chapels on the sides of the craft gallery on them and balconies on arches.

The Church of San Mateo begins to be built from the mid eighteenth century on the initiative of the Jesuit order, over the space previously occupied by the Chapel of St. Augustine.

It replaced the old Church of San Mateo nailed in the space that was Market Square, which had become too small for the needs of this order.

The works were directed by maestro Pedro Garcia Campoy until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1773, when the works were stopped, retomándose in 1787 by the hand of Jerome Martinez Lara and acometiéndose and main aisles and the facade.
