The Sakharov Prize, which went to previous editions personalities like Nelson Mandela, the mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, Oswaldo Paya or Guillermo Fariñas, have been granted in this edition Iranian activists and Jafar Panahi Nasrin Sotoudeh.

The Mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, along with the Director of the European Parliament Office in Spain, Ignacio Samper, presented this morning the day of broadcast of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 2012 to be held on 14th Lorca December.

This conference is organized by the European Parliament Office in Spain, region and city of Lorca.

The mayor has said that through music, performances and debate, but about everything from the participation of young people, we will highlight the importance of freedom of conscience for all XXI century.

Young people are the future and the world are the ones who will let them.

We wanted the students of secondary schools in the municipality had a prominent role in this celebration, and so, among other activities, will expose all work being done together to form a "Field of Hope".

We want the events to be held in Lorca become a celebration of freedom and a tribute to those who defend the difficulty with all his might to human and fundamental rights.

What are the Sakharov Prize?

The Sakharov Prize, set up in 1985 in honor of the scientist and Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, is awarded annually by the European Parliament since 1988 as a means to honor individuals or organizations who have dedicated their lives or actions to defend human rights and freedoms.

The Mayor thanked the choice of Lorca as venue for these activities to the European authorities, Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia for their support in organizing the event and the European Parliament Office in Spain.

Nasrin Sotoudeh, born 1963, is a lawyer and human rights in Iran.

He has represented opposition activists jailed after the presidential elections of June 2009, as well as young people who are facing the death penalty, women and prisoners of conscience.

Nasrin was arrested in September 2010 on charges of disseminating propaganda against the state and conspiracy to undermine national security.

She was imprisoned in solitary confinement and incommunicado.

Jafar Panahi, born 1960, is a filmmaker, writer and producer Iran.

He was recognized internationally with the film "The White Balloon", which won the Camera d'Or in 1995 Cannes Film Festival.

His films often focus on the challenges that are faced children, women and people in need in Iran.

Panahi was arrested in March 2010 and later sentenced to six years imprisonment and disqualification from twenty of filmmaking.

He took his last film, "This is not a film," Iran's Cannes Film Festival, 2011 on a USB stick hidden inside a cake.

Rewarding the two activists, Parliament demonstrated its unwavering support to people who do not succumb to fear and defend liberty at the cost of his personal integrity.
