The Lorca Castle again host this Sunday's celebration of the 'Hanukkah' after 520 years (07/12/2012)

This cultural event, which has the support of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain, will be held at 17:30 in lorquina Jewry in memory of the presence of Muslims, Jews and Christians in the city of the Sun

The Councillor for Culture and Celebrations of the City of Lorca, Sandra Martinez, and the president of the Federation San Clemente, Luis Antonio Torres del Alcázar, presented this morning the celebration this Sunday from 17:30 hours of "Hanukkah" Jewry in Lorca Castle, 520 years after they stop performing in the grounds of Fort lorquina.

Martinez has invited all Lorca to participate in this cultural event, which commemorates a significant event in our history, since the presence of the Jewish community that we remember some years within the party "Lorca, Border Town" marked welcoming personality of Lorca and our multicultural identity.

The mayor stressed that "this event is a ritual that involves lighting the menorah, a candelabrum 8 arms reminiscent miracle of the oil in the Temple of Jerusalem and its conclusion in Lorca has the backing of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain, so we also want to encourage Jews around the country to be present at the event which was revived five years ago in the Garden Ruano Sun City and now returns to its natural environment. "

The Councillor of Culture has been "full support of the Council of the Federation San Clemente, that a year has passed, achieving ever greater participation of Lorca in the entire municipality in the celebrations of his employer."

Jews celebrate the festival of Hanukkah for eight days.

During this festival lights a menorah or candelabrum with eight branches (plus one more-the shamash candle "companion" used to light the other candles).

On the first night only comes on the arm more or Shamash and a candle, and each night a candle is increased, until the last day when all the lights chandelier complete.

Called the "Festival of Lights", which commemorates the defeat of the Greeks and the recovery of Jewish independence at the hands of the Maccabees, and subsequent purification of the Temple of Jerusalem pagan icons, which recalls the candlestick miracle that burned for eight consecutive days with a tiny amount of oil.

It is the only post-biblical Jewish religious holiday and therefore not rooted in the biblical text.

The events commemorated are narrated in the apocryphal books of Maccabees.

The festival of Hanukkah recalls the era of Greek hegemony in Israel, which began with the conquest of Alexander the Great, in 332 a.

C., and as such, there is no mention of it in Scripture.

When crown as king of Syria Antiochus IV Epiphanes (175 and 164 a.), He decides helenizar to Israel, thus forbidding the Jews to continue their traditions and customs.

A group of Jews known as the Maccabees (as their leader was Judah Maccabee), from the Modi'in area, began to revolt against the Greek soldiers, because they refused to do acts that went against their own religion .

They had a hard fight, and were a minority fighting against the Greek army, but their strategies, decision and faith led them to what is the miracle of Hanukkah, win a few against many.

When the war ends, the Maccabees returned to Jerusalem and the Holy Temple are defiled, they find the menorah (seven-branched candelabra) off, and ritually pure oil, just enough to turn it on one day.

It took eight days to have more oil ready yet had that little oil remained lit the menorah for eight days until more oil had.
