Two archaeological pieces from the work of historical recovery made in the medieval Synagogue participate in an exhibition in the Sephardic Museum of Toledo (17/07/2014)

The Councillor for Culture of the City of Lorca, Sandra Martinez, reported that the city council will make the secondment of two pieces of our Municipal Archaeological Museum for a temporary exhibition in the Sephardic Museum of Toledo.

The mayor pointed out that, once again, the cultural legacy Lorca focuses national archaeological picture.

Lorca has a paramount importance in the recovery of historical remains, a fact that has become more quality if possible by the discovery of the Jewish quarter near the castle.

This Jewry, and especially the Synagogue found in the area, are currently the focus of numerous studies by the international scientific community, which analyzes in detail the characteristics of this temple as well as the different pieces that have been recovered and rebuilt.

We are talking mainly of ritual lamps that have been involved in exhibitions like "Sefarad Bibles. Cross lives of the text and its readers" in the National Library of Spain, and "Lights of Sepharad".

Navarro Martinez stressed that the recovery of medieval synagogue Lorca is a fundamental point for the promotion of our cultural heritage.

This is a plus for our city, a legacy of manifest international notoriety.

We're talking about a synagogue in which they have not performed after rites of other religions, with all that entails for the Jewish world.

We are placing as reference point for the diaspora;

a job that will benefit all Lorca.

The Councillor for Culture explained that the two pieces will be exhibited in the Sephardic Museum in Toledo come from the archaeological excavations carried out in the synagogue in the old Jewish quarter of Lorca, in the castle of this city, and found deposited in the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Lorca.

The description of these is as follows:

Flaming fragment of plaster tracery with circles and wheels from fish bladders synagogue Lorca, with inventory number 2,994.

Dimensions: length 61 cm, width 34.5 cm, depth 13 cm.

Lamp 5 (rebuilt) air blown glass and applied (handles) from the synagogue of Lorca, with 2,908 No inventory.

Measurements: rim diameter 19 cm, height 15.9 cm, maximum diameter 16.4 cm.

Sandra Martinez reported for repo of two parts, the Autonomous Community has signed a deposit agreement with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, as the Sephardic Museum of Toledo is state-owned.

Thus, the State guarantees the safety of the parts during their temporary exhibition.

The temporary exhibition of the two mentioned archaeological pieces for a year in the Sephardic Museum of Toledo, will allow its temporary exhibition in a monographic museum of Jewish culture very interested and located in an exceptional place as the synagogue Transit Toledo, where these illustrate two pieces of cultural heritage Lorca, reporting the historical and archaeological heritage of the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Lorca and showing how was the decor and lighting inside the synagogue of Lorca in the fifteenth century.

Recall that, according to expert analysis, Lorca Jewry was inhabited in medieval times by about 70 people.

Thanks to extensive archaeological recovery work conducted in this setting, more than 2,600 pieces of glass, after an arduous task, allowed the reconstruction of 20 lamps rituals, specifically those used in the feast of the "Hanukkah" were found (in which the cleansing of the Temple in Jerusalem) is celebrated.
