The new network will storm the city of Lorca protect the city from future floods (06/01/2015)

The works of urban renewal neighborhoods are planned through an innovative study of Georeferenced Information System of flooding of streets

The Ministry of Development, Public Works and Planning promotes the protection of the city of Lorca future disasters, thanks to the model of repair and renovation of the network of storm water and sanitation launched in the urban regeneration of Lorca .

The Minister Francisco Barnabas said today that it is "essential to have a quality system aimed at expanding the capacity of evacuation system to improve urban infrastructure to better prepare the city for future disasters."

To do this, said Barnabas, are developing urban regeneration, with two objectives, firstly, repair damage from earthquakes in service networks and public spaces and on the other, put the city to future challenges.

Thus, the urban regeneration and repair of hydraulic infrastructures are focusing on intermediate districts, badly damaged by the earthquakes of 2011, as La Viña, Alfonso X, San Jose and San Diego.

The planning of these actions has been adapted by planning based on referenced Information Systems (GIS) flooding the streets, where water flows from the basins located in Uptown called up the garden areas.

To this end, software has been used georeferenced adapting modeling in the urban areas of significant potential risk of flooding.

In this sense, the work has been organized taking into account the distribution of infrastructure and urban development of the city as it should be mentioned that in the last decade, the city has grown regardless of the risk of flooding.

The earthquakes in May 2011 caused damage to the city, especially in buildings, while floods impairments were more widespread and came to affect a wide variety of urban infrastructures, many of which showed insufficiently prepared for receive rainfall of those features.

The surface epicenter of earthquakes, located just one kilometer underground networks fundamentally damaged water supply and sanitation in the city, as it was found a year later.

International regeneration model

This system has been studied by scientists, engineers and experts in the management of urban water systems, such as during the Second International Conference on 'Design, Construction, Supervision and Control of Urban Water', held in the Algarve (Portugal).

One of the conclusions of this conference was that the damage caused by earthquakes in 2011 were seen in the malfunction of stormwater drainage infrastructure in flood the following year.
