The Early Childhood Center launched a project of chest physiotherapy for 52 children with respiratory diseases (21/05/2015)

The program will consist of an evaluation of the respiratory condition of the child and the design of the treatment, which is of a preventive nature or welfare nature, 28 premature infants, 12 children with motor impairment and 12 children with Down syndrome and other syndromes.

The Councillor for Social Services City of Lorca, Mari Carmen Ruiz, by the Director of Early Childhood Center "Fina Navarro Lopez", Maria Isabel Casbas, physiotherapists and center this morning presented a draft Respiratory Therapy in Early Intervention launched due to increased premature babies, children with Down syndrome and movement disorders of diverse nature they have in common constitute an important group for the development of respiratory disease risk.

Mari Carmen Ruiz explained that "the program, which will be held for a year, will consist of an evaluation of the respiratory condition of children and treatment design, which will be mainly preventive in children who have a greater predisposition to suffer respiratory virus as infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), and for welfare in those exhibiting a significant accumulation of mucus as a result of a severe motor impairment or syndrome ".

The Councillor for Social Services has reported that "the treatment will be individualized and consist of the application of techniques of mucociliary clearance, at least once a week, in sessions of 50 minutes. Workshops for learning the techniques they will be organized by parents so that they can implement in the daily management of the baby at home, for which groups of parents with children who present the same respiratory problems were created. "

Ruiz stressed that "the goals of chest physiotherapy to be achieved with this project are to reduce the number of hospital admissions for respiratory processes, reduce the severity of hospitalizations in relation to the requirement of ventilatory support, decrease the number of relapses, and to improve and promote the development of children, especially the quality of motor acquisitions. "

The mayor of Social Services explained that "the program of respiratory physiotherapy intervention is developed for 28 premature infants, 12 children with motor impairment and 12 children with Down syndrome and other syndromes with hypotonia are seen in Child Development Center and Early attention "Fina Navarro Lopez" Hall of Lorca. "

Mari Carmen Ruiz said that "in order to improve the respiratory status of these 52 children, it is important that the respiratory therapy has been shown effective in the treatment of BPD, bronchiolitis, pneumonia and atelectasis. The respiratory therapy, has main objective is to remove excess bronchial secretions, allowing better ventilation and gas exchange. With chest physiotherapy, and specifically techniques mucociliary clearance, mucus clearance is achieved which significantly improves driving gas in the airways ".

The Councillor for Social Services stressed that "physiotherapy treatments aimed at preventing or reducing the occurrence of BPD and other respiratory diseases represent a huge saving in pediatric costs. Therefore, respiratory physiotherapy centers and Early Childhood Development plays a key role in improving respiratory morbidity of premature infants and children with motor impairment in the future, physiotherapy will be starring in improving the quality of life of these young patients. "
