A new research project analyzes the stages of geological fault between Góñar and Alhama (17/06/2015)

The main objective of this action, part of the INTERGEO project is to analyze the behavior of this failure to understand the mechanisms of generation of earthquakes.

This requires a drilling depth of 250 m to cross the fault zone closest to the epicenter of the earthquake of 2011 will be held.

This is particularly the intergeo project, which will investigate the area of ​​the fault generating earthquakes of May 2011, through a vertical borehole of the FAM, at the height of the Rambla de la Torrecilla.

The main objective is to deepen the knowledge of the behavior of this fault sismogenético order to understand the mechanisms of generation of earthquakes in the same, which will help improve future studies of seismic risk.

For this, the drilling recovery witnessed 250 m deep, cross the fault zone with a higher degree of exhumation, that is, the fault zone that thousands of years ago was located near the area of ​​the cortex where start earthquakes in the area.

This study aims to get an analysis of the seismic potential of inter-segment FAM, besides its features, zones through data collection.

The INTERGEO project analyzes intersegment areas of large failures to meet their behavior and determine the seismic hazard.

This work is being carried out by a team of geologists, geophysicists and Geodesy, coordinated by the group of Active Tectonics, Paleoseismicity and Associated Risks of the Complutense University of Madrid.

The intermediate zones of the fault are those in which this change of behavior and / or geometry, and therefore often the regions where its activity associated reliefs change morphology and dimensions.

This makes it the largest rivers in these areas are channeled between segments and open valleys.

This is especially clear in the Guadalentín River Valley, where the variety of large populations: Lorca, Totana, Alhama de Murcia are located practically on top of the trace of the fault Alhama de Murcia (FAM), and along riverbeds happened to the valley open through intercompany areas of the FAM.
