The Community Irrigation Campo Alto asks the same solidarity that requires the Castilian-La Mancha (20/08/2015)

Juan Garcia Corbalán, president of the Community of Irrigators "Campo Alto", which includes farmers in the northern districts of Lorca, has denounced "serious obstacles" that is posing the board of the Community Irrigation Lorca to prevent this area meets the water resources to ensure their production.

Irrigation Community High Camp includes 300 villagers in the districts of northern Lorca.

They are small producers totaling just over 400 hectares of dry land, linked mostly to organic farming, where the cultivation of almonds, olives, grapes and herbs represents the main source of income of a populated area of former emigrants in France.

They have just over half a million cubic meters of sewage coming from the area and a couple of highly salinated wells.

In a report of May this year, the Water Commission of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS) noted in a report on "certain and imminent risk" of loss of farms in the Highlands.

In fact, in the last year the drought has wiped out more than 50% of the almond crop in this area and woodland situation is "dire", as denounced by the president of the Coordination of Organizations of Farmers and Ranchers (COAG) Murcia, Miguel Padilla.

Despite the severe drought, farmers in Alto Campo has denied making 100,000 m3 of water from the nearby River Turrilla.

Nor has authorized the grant of 630,000 m3 / year of Luchena, as opposed to the Community Irrigation Lorca, which claims its exploitation as "historic right", despite having made their allegations outside the period of public information and outside the legally established procedure in the Public Water Regulation.

Therefore, farmers in Alto Campo saw the open sky on the use of part of the waters of the "Canalillo" which comes from a source known as Gallery Cabezo de la Mina, located in La Paca.

It is up to 250,000 cubic meters with the villagers replace extracted from wells with high salt concentration, burning their crops.

Hence also they would like to supply water to farmers in the area, now moving his cabin along five kilometers to 8,000 cattle can quench thirst near the spring.

They are not the only animals that suffer water stress.

Corbalan Garcia and some of his peers, usually roam the landscapes of the area to supply small troughs in which to drink and fauna, thereby ensuring their survival.

The use of the waters of Canalillo not affect the aquifer Mingrano, located at the nearby hamlet of El Rincon, or the mass of swamp water Valdeinfierno, which is also the Community Irrigation Lorca draws or supposed condition whatsoever to other existing and legalized exploitation.

So reads the report of the Commissioner's Water CHS has granted use to High Camp only until December 31 this year.

A small water infrastructure that had abandoned since 1973 and that farmers in La Paca been cleaned, rebuilt and conditioning.

They have also paid neckline more than 25,000 euros accumulated over the past two years for a use which again demands the Community Irrigation Lorca fines.

In that time they have also seen, on two occasions, irrigation perimeter thoroughly checked by allegations of this.

"Last time to technical laughed at the absurdity of the situation," said the president of the villagers in the Highlands.

"Certainly not us we grow outside the perimeter, even in neighboring towns, or those who have fleeced the water to the villages in the area by opening illegal wells," says Garcia Corbalán.

"Just ask the same solidarity that the leaders of the Community of Irrigators of Lorca or the Central Union of Irrigation Aqueduct Tajo-Segura require the Castilian-La Mancha," says Garcia Corbalán.

"It is not entitled to demand solidarity who refuses to practice it among neighbors of the same people," he says, adding that "we want water for all farmers, dryland and irrigated also, we can live with dignity in our job".
