Awarded the works to restore and consolidate the convent church of Santa María la Real de las Huertas in Lorca (18/09/2015)

The work is complementary to the first emergency work done after the earthquake, in which the structures were consolidated and stability assured sealing assembly

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports has awarded the works of consolidation and restoration of the convent church of Santa María la Real de las Huertas in Lorca (Murcia).

This intervention is promoted by the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain (IPCE), will cost € 399.590,62 € and will have a lead time of seven months.

The author of the project architect Francisco Jurado and the contractor of the works is Lorquimur SL

Work will focus, among other areas, decks, access to archaeological remains discovered since the restoration of wall paintings.

The current intervention is complementary to the first emergency work done after the earthquake, in which the structures were consolidated and stability and tightness of the assembly is assured.

This new project addresses the restoration of the covers, the transfer of the stairs, the expansion of archaeological surveys and preparation for your visit;

restoration of wall paintings in the lunettes of the temple;

recovery of paint and interior finishes and lighting inside the temple.

Regarding the restoration of the covers, it provides for the replacement of parts or excessively deformed wooden items, reusing the existing tile itself.

It is also planned extension and improvement of the archaeological excavation of the Hispano remains found in the basement of the church, allowing access so they can be visited.

As for the restoration of the murals of the temple lunettes, paintings detached in the earthquake, will proceed to the restoration and reintegration of all fragments in its original position, as well as cleaning the rest.

Lastly, the chapel will be restored crypt of the Counts of St. Julian.

The convent of Santa Maria de las Huertas is located in Lorca garden.

This place because of its fertility, was occupied since Roman times as evidenced by documented remains of the centuries I and II d.

C. Between the tenth century and early eleventh century is built what must be a Almunia (Muslim recreational property) of an Islamic veneer made of masonry is preserved.

This building should be in use until the first half of the thirteenth century, until part of it was used for the construction of a Franciscan chapel in the S. XV.

A flood in 1653 completely ruined convent, having to get up again during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

It was sold off in 1835 and secularised community, although it would be replenished through the purchase of the building by individuals and subsequent delivery to the Franciscan Order.
