The Ministry will have 250,000 euros of state funding for the regeneration of the Sierra del Almirez in Lorca (29/09/2015)

The Minister of Water, Agriculture and Environment, Adela Martinez-Cache, said today that the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment allocated a batch of 250,000 euros to fund the regeneration of the Sierra del Almirez in Lorca, which was devastated by a forest fire last August.

The technicians of the Ministry are drafting the regeneration project, which will allow to carry out the first performances in private farms affected, accounting for 40 percent of the area burned and whose holders have made available to the regional government its land for these jobs.

The project will cover the removal of burnt wood, improving the roads affected and the construction of dams and barricades to prevent erosion and torrential phenomena that may occur by the autumn rains.

These tasks can control soil loss and seeds, increase infiltration of torrential rainwater, provide organic matter to the soil, reduce runoff and facilitate natural regeneration.

The project also provides for the elimination of those trees at the edges of the fire have been weakened by the effects of the high temperatures and exhibit a reduction in vegetative vigor and therefore may be affected by pests drillers .

The works are designed to regenerate an area of ​​great ecological, forestry and environmental value, declared a Special Protection Area (SPA) Sierras Giant-Pericay, Lomas del Vulture-Rio Luchena and Sierra de la Torrecilla and Site of Community Importance (LIC) Sierra del Gigante.

The aim of this work is to implement the recovery plan set ablaze in the Sierra del Almirez of Lorca, presented in late August by the Minister terrain.

Said plan is one of three prepared by the Ministry for the regeneration of the mountains of Lorca, Calasparra and Cieza affected by the fires of August.

The investment is more than 3.3 billion euros, financed with EU funds and, of que1.102.248 euros will go towards the restoration of the environment Almadenes Canyon, 450,290 euros to the recovery of the burned area Almorchón and 1,805,154 euros for the Sierra del Almirez, where state funding announced today is included.

Martinez-Cache stressed "the sensitivity and quick response of the Ministry to financially support this plan in the various meetings held on the matter with Secretary General of Agriculture and Food Ministry, Carlos Cabanas".
