The National Center for Microbiology confirms a case of Zika virus in Lorca in a patient who had traveled from an affected country (02/02/2016)

The National Microbiology Center of Majadahonda yesterday confirmed a case of Zika virus in the patient treated two weeks ago at the Hospital Rafael Méndez de Lorca and had been treated as suspicious zika.

Last January 22 was notified to the Epidemiology Service of the Department of Public Health a suspected case of Zika virus disease in middle-aged man, who lives in Murcia, but had recently traveled and during the period incubation of the disease to a country affected by the epidemic.

The laboratory confirmed yesterday microbiologically Zika virus infection in samples sent to the National Microbiology Centre.

The patient is in good health and medical discharge, and all necessary measures were taken for treatment to avoid possible infection.

This case would be the first to be detected in the region of Murcia, and the fourth in Spain on similar characteristics, ie, cases in people who have traveled to affected countries.

Prevention measures in place

The same day of the notification of the case, the Ministry of Health took appropriate action according to the protocol in force in relation to the recommendations on protection from mosquito bites infected people in the days following the bite, and research and control in the vicinity of the case.

To date there have been no more reports of suspected cases by Zika virus.

The disease produces the Zika virus mosquitoes of the genus Aedes' and presents with a mild clinical picture characterized by mild fever, rash that often extends from the face to the body, arthritis and other symptoms like conjunctivitis or fatigue and headache.

The Director General of Public Health, Manuel Molina, explained that "the cases are resolved without serious complications" and also added that hospitalization rates are low, although the virus has been linked to the onset of neurological birth defects infected mothers during pregnancy.

On the other hand, said that since the Ministry of Health are developing various information campaigns on preventive measures and prevent the reproduction of the species, as well as protection systems indoors and outdoors and mitigation actions in the event of bites.
