Lorca signing the Manifesto of Cities for Climate (13/08/2008)

The Councillor for Sustainable Development of the City of Lorca, Francisco Garcia, gave a press conference to explain the agreements reached at the Third Assembly of the Spanish network cities Cities for Climate, held on 21 and 22 July 2008 San Sebastian and was attended by the Environment Minister, Elena Espinosa.

Territories belonging to this network, formed by two hundred seven municipalities, among which is Lorca, and squarely in the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces signed the Manifesto in the House of Cities for Climate.

Through this agreement, all municipalities are committed to promoting the recommendations of the European Covenant of Mayors for Climate.

This will involve carrying out the work required to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, by carrying out an action plan to reduce these emissions and takes into account energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, increasing carbon sinks and reducing the volume of waste.

Similarly, with this manifesto municipalities undertake to promote renewable energy, reduce harmful emissions from transport and to raise awareness and involve citizens in protecting the climate.

Also, in the framework of cooperation on environmental issues of cities, municipalities agreed to implement and fund a structure of technical and promotional support, including the implementation of assessment tools and monitoring mechanisms to facilitate sharing expertise between different territories and the tools necessary to facilitate common understanding of the various developments.

By Consistory Lorca was the very Councillor for Sustainable Development, Francisco Garcia, who signed the manifesto to the President of the Spanish Network of Cities for Climate and Mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero.

The signing of the Manifesto of Cities for Climate by the municipality of Lorca will the effective implementation of these guidelines.

"This is an important agreement," said the mayor Francisco García, "because it will encourage further work we developed in the context of sustainable development.

During the coming years we will make a strong commitment to sustainable development and environmental, with what it all means, put to work for the conservation of the natural environment of working for everyone.

We have acquired a firm commitment, along with other Spanish towns, to conduct an inventory of our emissions of greenhouse gases, then take steps to reduce these harmful gases. "

The signing of the Manifesto of Cities for Climate will be a turning point in the work of the sustainability of the city.

"We are working on Local Agenda 21, which will collect all necessary measures to Lorca become a role model in the context of sustainability."

Francisco Garcia also said that the measures to be adopted in the upcoming dates will have to rely on the collective support of all municipal, commercial groups like the Chamber of Commerce, neighborhood associations and youth and absolutely all of Lorca.

"Together we must create a better Lorca, greener and healthier.

Since the City can lead the measures, but if we have the cooperation of citizens, our effort will be in vain.

That is why I ask Lorca all work together to create a sustainable Lorca, because the certain result will be worth it. "

Similarly, the mayor was willing to hear suggestions from all citizens and groups who have ideas to complete the initiatives that will be included in the Local Agenda 21.
