Huerto Ruano hosts a conference on Jewish culture organized by the Foundation "Sefarad Beitenu" and the city of Lorca (07/09/2009)

The lecture given by Professor Maritza Corrales Capestany, entitled "Cuban Sephardim: successive diasporas", shows the maintenance of Jewish culture throughout history.

Sefarad Beitenu Foundation, in collaboration with the city of Lorca and Lorca Taller del Tiempo, will develop different activities to inform residents of Lorca and Murcia Jewish culture.

In fact Lorca will host a lecture to be given the teacher Maritza Corrales Capestany, under the title "Cuban Sephardim: their subsequent diaspora."

This is an intervention that images presented through the historical background of the current Cuban Sephardic Jewish community.

A community that has recreated in his life on the island, the deep influence of culture and language of the mythical Sefarad.

Since the departure of Jews from Spain after the expulsion of 1492, the Sephardim have been ambassadors of Spanish culture, maintaining Jewish traditions and the Spanish league over the centuries.

Maritza Corrales Capestany, historian of the Jewish Community of Cuba, contributor to the Foundation Fernando Ortiz, Faculty of History and the Centre for International Migration at the University of Havana.

Some of his books and articles are: The Chosen Island: Jews in Cuba (Salsedo Press, USA); convergences and clashes between Arabs and Jews in Cuba (Fundación Tres Culturas, Spain), economic and spatial behavior of Jewish businesses and industries in Havana, 1902-1959 (Fondo de Cultura Economica, Mexico); map Hebrew presence in Cuba (Fundación Fernando Ortiz, Cuba), Fragments of the past: 60 Anniversary of the Lodge of Cuba Benei Berith Maimonides (Jewish Community of Cuba, Havana); of freedom and exile: José Martí and the Cuban Hebrew (Hebrew University, Jerusalem).

He has participated in numerous international events and lectured in more than twenty universities and Israel, the United States, Mexico, Canada, Argentina and France.

The conference will take place in the Garden Ruano on 9 September at 20.30.

This initiative and the recovery of the Jewish heritage of the castle, bound to attract cultural tourism and the region Lorca, for which the Foundation and the Research Center are already working, and new economic development through this specialized tourism.
