The first phase of excavations at the castle of Lorca discovered late medieval domestic structures of the north end of the Jewish urban fabric (26/02/2010)

Youth Councillor of the City of Lorca, Joaquin Ruiz, and coordinator of activities of the Youth Association of Alternative Entertainment Qdamos, Cristian Romero, presented this morning the second phase of the program activities for young people between 14 and 35 years in the Friday nights and Saturdays from 26 February until 20 March.

"Lorca Taller del Tiempo" has received the final report containing the results of the first phase of archaeological works have been initiated in the eastern area of the castle of Lorca, confirming the importance of the Jewish Lorca Castle.

With the archaeological made it begins the process of historical and archaeological study, consolidation and enhancement of Lorca castle is suitable for tourist use the fortified eastern area.

This action is performed under the Director Plan-Fort Parador del Sol, funded by the Plan to Promote Tourism Product Lorca involving the local, regional and state levels, and aims to set the medium term, archaeological park that serves as a connecting link between the sector musealized La Fortaleza del Sol and the remains found and preserved in the area of the inn (synagogue, house No. VII, remains Almohad, etc.) and establish, in this way, a route inside the castle to allow the visit to the archaeological remains of interest, including the church of San Clemente and the Fish Gate.

The first archaeological excavations have unearthed a series of late medieval domestic structures (XIV-XV) belonging to the northern edge of the urban fabric of the medieval Jewish quarter of Lorca.

In addition to the discovery of some elements of particular relevance to the main dwelling documented (as some fragments of multiple lamps or janukkiot) the excavation has uncovered some construction debris that could be identified with the formation of late medieval suburb of Alcala, in the years immediately after the Spanish conquest of the thirteenth century.

The various laboratory studies that are being developed in parallel (and archaeobotanical archaeozoological essentially) allow to specify key aspects for understanding the medieval past of its inhabitants, as the characteristics of their diet or their production strategies.

What was the spatial configuration of the castle in the Andalusian period?

When and how it formed inside the Jewish quarter?

What were its boundaries?

The new phase of archaeological work in the castle, now underway, will try to answer these and other unanswered questions, still unanswered.

The archaeological survey has been developed by an interdisciplinary team under the direction of Dr. Jorge A.

Eiroa Rodríguez of the Universidad de Murcia, and archaeologists Juan Gallardo Carrillo and José Ángel González Ballesteros.
